A festival or gala is an event ordinarily staged by a local community, which centers on and celebrates some unique aspect of that community and the Festival. Among many religions, a feast is a set of celebrations in honour of God or gods. A feast and a festival are historically interchangeable.

In the food context, a festival can refer to a celebration or event that is centered around food. Festivals often feature traditional dishes or cuisines, as well as street food, snacks, and drinks.

Some examples of food festivals around the world include:

  • Oktoberfest: A beer festival held annually in Munich, Germany, featuring traditional Bavarian foods such as sausages, sauerkraut, and pretzels.
  • La Tomatina: A festival held in Buñol, Spain, where participants throw tomatoes at each other in the streets. After the event, many people enjoy dishes made with tomatoes, such as gazpacho or tomato salad.
  • Holi: A Hindu festival celebrated in India and other parts of the world, featuring colorful powders and water that are thrown during the celebrations. Traditional foods for the festival include sweet dishes such as gujiya and thandai.
  • Taste of Chicago: An annual food festival held in Chicago, Illinois, featuring dishes from local restaurants and food trucks.
  • Street Food Festival: A popular event held in many cities around the world, featuring a variety of street food vendors selling snacks and meals such as tacos, kebabs, and dumplings.
  • Festival also refers to one of the foods from Jamaica which can be best described as a slightly sweet, crispy cornmeal fritter that is frequently served in the country with any Jamaican dish. Festivals go very well with Jerk dishes and spicy fish recipes where the sweet Festivals provide a deliciously complementary taste.
