Filoncino refers to the classic Italian bread. It is a long, airy bread and usually called the cousin of France's baguette, as it is also known as an Italian-style baguette. Moreover, it refers to a longer and more narrow bread made in Campagna. At times, this bread is scored across the top like a baguette. This custom dates back to the period when the French ruled the Kingdom of Naples. Interestingly, while the French controlled Naples hundreds of years ago, Napolitans consider the scoring of bread in this fashion a very recent custom.
