Origin and Significance: The Laba Rice Porridge Festival is the grandest festival in the twelfth lunar month. It falls on the eighth day of the month, and was called "La Day” in ancient days. Since the Pre Qin dynasty, the Laba Day has been a time for sacrificing ancestors and jinns as well as an opportunity to pray for great harvest and good luck. According to some Buddhist legend, the founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni attained enlightenment on this day, too. Therefore the Laba festival has also become a festival of Buddhists.
