Apple Butter refers to a thick preserve made with apples, sugar, cider and spices. It is one of the sweets in the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch "sweets and sours"; a sweet spread for breads which is served with cottage cheese or rye bread at most family dinners Traditionally, Apple Butter is used as a topping on cottage cheese or spread on rye bread with a pork and sauerkraut meal. Some spread it on toast, Scrapple, pancakes, waffles, even french toast. It can also be used as a fat substitute in spiced baking batters and doughs.
