Alupihang Dagat refers to one of the seafoods enjoyed in the Philippines. It is called mantis shrimp in English. It is also known in the Philippine as Tatampal or Hipong Dapa. It is usually cooked like Shrimps, as in Halabos which means just cooking the Alupihang Dagat in a pan as is with just a bit of salt until they turn red.

My mother used to buy and cook Alupihang Dagat for us when we were young kids. That time, they were cheaper than shrimps which we can not afford to buy. It has been so long now that I have not tasted this particular food. But I will never forget its taste and smell. It reminds me always of my mom - it is one of the foods she cooked for us to survive poverty.
