Frittilaria lanceloata also called Chocolate Lily or Rice Root refers to a rare herb that is 80 centimeters tall from bulb with numerous rice-like bulblets and flowers are mottled maroon and yellow.
It is used for food: the bulbs were eaten by the Coast Salish, also the Squamish, Sechelt, Halqemeylem and Straits Salish (all in Canada). The bulbs were steamed in pits or boiled. Some have eaten the rice-like nodules on the bulb and reported that they taste vaguely like rice.
It is interesting to note that Frittilaria lanceloata is rare and should not be disturbed if found in the wild.
