Tamatiebredie or Tamatie Bredie refers to the most popular and traditional variety of Bredie or stew in South Africa which is made of tomatoes and lamb. Tamatiebredie which literally means "tomato stew" is actually is actually a lamb-tomato stew. Tamatiebredie is cooked very slowly, coupling rich, fatty meat such as mutton with tomatoes. Tomatobredie, normally made with mutton, is cooked for a very long time, and its seasonings include cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and cloves as well as chilli. Bredie is the Afrikaans term for a stew which is usually mutton-based and served with rice. The most popular is Tamatiebredie and the most unusual is Waterblommetjiebredie. Tamatiebredie is also known as Tomatie Bredie.
